Long live the king!

(Bill Glahn)

From the National Post,

Montrealers rally downtown in support of ‘No Kings’ movement.

Yes, yes, yes. Technically, Montreal (literal translation: Mount Royal) has a king, stylized as Charles III. His official title,

Charles the Third, by the Grace of God King of Canada and His other Realms and Territories, Head of the Commonwealth.

(Apparently, “Defender of the Faith” only applies in some jurisdictions.)

I’m willing to believe that the Frenchies of Quebec don’t believe in Charles III. But what’s the excuse in Toronto? From the Star,

Hundreds gather at ‘No Kings’ protest outside U.S. consulate in downtown Toronto.

At least the Star has the good sense to rebrand the exercise,

The Toronto demonstration was part of the more than 2,700 anti-Trump protests happening worldwide on Saturday, organizers said, also known as “No Kings” protests.

“Worldwide”? They aren’t kidding. From KTLA-5,

International participants included Australia, Iceland, Sweden, Denmark, Ireland, England, Germany, the Netherlands, France, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Panama, Mexico, Canada, and the British Virgin Islands. In countries that still maintain monarchies, demonstrators marched under the adapted slogans “No Tyrants” or “No Dictators.”

Quoting Frank Drebin in The Naked Gun (1988) on the subject of the British Crown,

Protecting the Queen’s safety is a task that is gladly accepted by Police Squad. No matter how silly the idea of having a queen might be to us, as Americans, we must be gracious and considerate hosts.

I do miss her so.

Scott has a post up about the local Minneapolis Star Tribune‘s coverage of yesterday’s protests. He makes the point that the paper is not allowing public comments on its main story.

Over on Twitter (X), the outlet has posted no fewer than eight (8) stories to its account there, which do allow for comments.

Of the eight, this post drew the most attention, with 156 replies. They are not kind.

In stark contrast, the Star Tribune is allowing comments on a story today about a Republican candidate for Minnesota governor.

Goose, gander, etc.
