Feedback Taken: Tractor Supply Company Ends All “Diversity, Equity, Inclusion” Programs

Tractor Supply Company is quickly making amends with customers angry about its  “Diversity, Equity, Inclusion” programs. It will also no longer support LGBTQ and global warming causes.

It’s a business decision. Go woke, go broke is common these days. American consumers have had enough. I think the pendulum is swinging back to a more reasonable approach to doing business. Americans just want to purchase what they came in for and skip the political and social justice issues

Tractor Supply Co. posted a statement on social media detailing its new direction after three weeks of social-media and other backlash over the previous attachments to left-wing causes that are not popular with its customer base.

“We work hard to live up to our mission and values every day and represent the values of the communities and customers we serve. We have heard from customers that we have disappointed them. We have taken this feedback to heart. Going forward, we will ensure our activities and giving tie directly to our business,” the company wrote Thursday.

The statement included five bullet points distancing the company from a series of policies under CEO Hal Lawton that were highlighted recently by journalist Robby Starbuck.

No more DEI stuff, but the company promises to keep a ‘respectful’ atmosphere.

The company is going back to what its customers expect of it. Corporate giving will focus on rural American priorities. That means a focus on ag education, animal welfare, and veteran causes. No more sponsoring pride festivals and voting campaigns.

Tractor Supply Company will stop submitting data to the Human Rights Campaign for Corporate Equality index scores. Why did it start that practice in the first place? Many corporations are breaking away from DEI demands from progressive groups.

No more global warming nonsense. The company will “withdraw our carbon emission goals, and focus on our land and water conservation efforts.”

The company listened to feedback and acted. It pledges to continue to listen to customers and team members.

Kudos to them for correcting course and doing what its customers expect of them. It’s a store that has a rural customer base. The company doesn’t want to face widespread boycotts from unhappy farmers and other rural customers.

The DEI mandates from the progressive left are toxic for businesses. Conservatives on social media began to call for a boycott.

Last February, Tractor Supply Company received recognition as a “diverse and inclusive workplace.”

“Our deeply rooted Mission and Values are the foundation of who we are as an organization. They dictate that Tractor Supply prioritize a safe, respectful and inclusive work environment that values diversity of thought and perspective,” Tractor Supply Company’s executive vice president and chief human resources officer Melissa Kersey said at the time. “We are honored that by adhering to our long-held standards, we continue to be among the top tier globally for gender equality and are recognized as a place where diversity is valued and appreciated.”

When the corporate office becomes out of touch with its customer base, this is what can happen.

Tractor Supply Company has been in business for 85 years. It operates 2,233 locations across 49 states. It’s not some little mom-and-pop operation. There is a risk of losing a lot of money if the customers turn on the business.

The company was appeasing social justice activists with new policies.

Tractor Supply previously had targeted achieving net zero emissions in operations by 2040, as well as to increase people of color at the manager level and above by 50% and raise spending with diverse suppliers by 35%, among other goals, by 2026. The company had about 49,000 employees as of the end of 2023.

Stop the madness. Diversity hires are a disaster for the workplace. Jobs should be awarded on merit, not skin color or ethnic heritage. Haven’t we learned that lesson? In 2023, the Supreme Court ruled against using affirmative action in college admissions. That’s a good start.

Businesses are slowly getting the message. We’ll all be better off for that.
