Former President Jimmy Carter will be receiving home hospice care, according to a statement from The Carter Center on Saturday afternoon. It read:
After a series of short hospital stays, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter today decided to spend his remaining time at home with his family and receive hospice care instead of additional medical intervention, He has the full support of his family and his medical team. The Carter family asks for privacy during this time and is grateful for the concern shown by his many admirers.
Carter, 98, served at the 39th President of the United States from 1977 to 1981, as a successor to President Gerald Ford and a predecessor to President Ronald Reagan. Carter was only in office for one term, as he lost in a landslide to Reagan in 1980.
The former president, a Democrat, is the oldest living president. Carter has spent his time in recent years focused on humanitarian efforts, such as his efforts with Habitat for Humanity.
He and his wife Rosalynn, 95, have been married for 76 years, and their last public appearance was in August in Georgia for a Friends of the Carter’s event, according to WMAZ.
