We’ve written in the past about “The Waffle House Index” — a measure cooked up by FEMA to judge the severity of a given storm (or other calamity). It’s based on the restaurant’s reputation for staying open and dealing efficiently with natural disasters.
The restaurant chain is also known for having to deal with other disasters that are anything but “natural” — namely, angry customers.
But this all must lead to Waffle House employees being tough characters, as a video that just went viral revealed.
The video — taken at a Waffle House in Austin, Texas — has been viewed more than 14 million times, and shows one of the female employees warding off an attack by a customer who threw a chair at her.

The look on her face was something else, as she caught the chair in midair, tossing it to the side, and glowering, as though to say, “Is that all you’ve got?”

That alone would have made the video epic, but she also fought off some patrons when they attacked her.

It didn’t end well for one of the customers, when she tried to climb over the counter to get at the employee. The customer tumbled onto the floor and ended up getting punched by the employee.
People praised the quick hands of the “Waffle House Girl.”
“The US Military has many branches defending our country,” comedian Brad Williams tweeted. “Army Navy Marines Air Force Waffle House Employees.”
“I was curious why Waffle House was trending,” tweeted civil rights attorney Scott Hechinger. “I figured it was a fight. But after going down the rabbit hole, watching various clips, I’ve come to the conclusion that this was no fight. This was the global coronation of a new superhero. ‘Waffle House Girl.’”
“She needs to be the lead in the next action film,” actor and musician Mekka Don tweeted. “Waffle House job training is off the chain.”
On top of it all, actress Lynda Carter, who became famous for her television role as “Wonder Woman,” shared an old video of her fighting off a chair attack, adding, “I trained at Waffle House.”

What started the fight? Allegedly, some patrons were angry about slow service. But violence is not the proper response to slow service–try filing a Yelp complaint next time, and that will avoid possibly getting arrested for losing it. Obviously, with ‘Waffle House Girl,’ they picked the wrong person to take on.
