Musk To Offer ‘General Amnesty’ To Censored Accounts

Elon Musk says Twitter will offer “general amnesty” to censored accounts as long as they do not break the law or engage in “egregious” spam.

He first asked Twitter users to vote in a poll about “general amnesty:”

“Should Twitter offer a general amnesty to suspended accounts, provided that they have not broken the law or engaged in egregious spam?” he asked via tweet.

Approximately 72% of voters answered “yes.” Over 3 million people voted in the poll. In response to the final results of the poll, Musk tweeted that the “general amnesty” policy will begin next week.

“The people have spoken,” he added. “Amnesty begins next week. Vox Populi, Vox Dei.”

The change in policy is monumental, as conservative accounts have long faced unfair censorship and arbitrary suspensions.

MRC Free Speech America’s unique CensorTrack database recorded in June that TikTok removed a video of conservative political commentator Ben Shapiro saying that so-called medical experts who believe men can get pregnant are activists, not doctors.

MRC also found that Big Tech social media platforms censored election-related content from social media users no fewer than 16,007,321 times from April to June, stemming from 15 individual cases of censorship.

For his part, Musk believes that Twitter is the “de facto public town square” of society.

“Given that Twitter serves as the de facto public town square, failing to adhere to free speech principles fundamentally undermines democracy,” he tweeted in March of this year.

Conservatives are under attack. Contact your representatives and demand that Big Tech be held to account to mirror the First Amendment while providing transparency, clarity on “hate speech” and equal footing for conservatives. If you have been censored, contact us at the Media Research Center contact form, and help us hold Big Tech accountable.
