The Border Crisis Is Inexcusable—Mayorkas Should Resign Now

(The opinions expressed by contributors are their own and do not necessarily represent the views of RedState.com.)

As House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy is preparing for the Republicans to take back the House, he announced Tuesday that Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas should either resign or face potential impeachment.

It’s the right call.

“Our country may never recover from Secretary Mayorkas’ dereliction of duty. This is why today I am calling on the Secretary to resign. He cannot and must not remain in that position,” McCarthy said in El Paso, Texas, as RedState reported.

He continued, “If Secretary Mayorkas does not resign, House Republicans will investigate every order, every action, and every failure. We’ll determine whether we can begin an impeachment inquiry.”

As there were over two million encounters at the southern border in 2022, it’s clear that Mayorkas has failed at his job to protect not only border communities but the nation as a whole.

While some people arrive with legitimate asylum claims, seeking a better life in the United States, the real issue has to do with drug trafficking and the dangerous practices that coyotes and cartels use to profit from suffering and desperation. Nobody should ever forget incidents like when 53 migrants died in a tractor-trailer in Texas back in June, or how fentanyl is pouring in from Mexico and killing Americans in disturbingly high numbers.

Tragedies like these are unacceptable, and it’s the result of poor policies that were erroneously done in the name of compassion.

Republicans know that Mayorkas likely will not resign, so they’ll instead need to conduct thorough investigations about why the border is such a mess. McCarthy even told Fox News correspondent Bill Melugin that he’ll hold a hearing at the border itself, for Democrats to understand the gravity of the situation.

In terms of impeachment, the Democrat majority would not give Republicans that vote necessary to actually remove Mayorkas from office.

As I mentioned in a recent piece, accountability is one of the two major steps Republicans must take to reign in the southern border.

President Joe Biden should have already asked Mayorkas to resign, as this crisis has reflected poorly on the administration. Although I’m not confident that Biden would choose someone much better to replace him, it would be a smart political move for him to fire the department’s figurehead. They already attempted to do with by canning Chris Magnus, the Customs and Border Protection Commissioner– except that does not go far enough.

Republicans and Democrats in border states understand that border security is a non-negotiable, yet the Biden administration has been painfully aloof. The crisis has been going on for far too long, and Americans are tired of it. McCarthy and the Republicans must maintain this level of urgency regarding the border once the new congressional session rolls around, as political fire can only burn for so long.
